Suicidal Angels – Bloodbath

Greece’s Suidical Angels are the thrash metal equivalent of Black Spiders in the UK and Blackguard in the US; they get booked as support on every applicable (and some not applicable) tour they’ve got time in the calendar to be on. But unlike those other two bands, they deserve it. Of course at times they do sound like Soulfly channeling Slayer and take the rest of their cues from the tutonic style of thrash, but despite being just about the hardest working thrash band around at the moment (three albums in the last three years amidst constant touring) they’ve maintained consistent quality as well. Bloodbath is probably their most accomplished album so far too, in terms of the music at any rate. Lyrically they’re still focusing on the stock thrash metal topics of violence, zombies and anti-God sentiment, indicated by the song titles alone (Morbid Intention To Kill, Summoning of The Dead, Face of God, Skinning The Undead), but musically their riffs are sharper, with added Overkill-groove (particularly the immense Legacy of Pain with guest vocals from Bolt Thrower‘s Karl Willetts), and their solos even more blistering. The crisp production, courtesy of Mystic Prophecy vocalist R.D. Liapakis, is the best of any of their records so far as well, making Bloodbath the perfect starting point for anyone who has caught the band on their numerous supporting tours recently.
