Joe Bonamassa - Beacon Theatre: Live From New York

Blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa has been something of a whirlwind in the genre over the last 12 years. Guest appearances aside, of which there have been several, he has produced 10 solo studio albums, plus three more with Black Country Communion and one with Beth Hart, and now release his fifth full live album, including the one with BCC. Indeed his last live album is only two years old. The problem that release had was the tracklisting was far too similar to 2008's live album Live From Nowhere In Particular. The only real reason to release it was that the 2008 album had no DVD version, whereas Live From The Royal Albert Hall was released on DVD in 2009, and fans often want audio counterparts to live video releases. This album (and its DVD, released six months previous) are far more justified. The tracklisting is substantially different to the previous live albums, but what really adds credence are the various special guests. Beth Hart joins Joe for Sinner's Prayer and I'll Take Care of You, two tracks from their 2011 collaborative covers album Don't Explain, John Hiatt joins in on covers of his own I Know A Place (which the two men also recorded together on Joe's 2010 album Black Rock) and Down Around My Place, and former Free front-man Paul Rodgers took over for covers of Walk In My Shadows (also on Joe's debut A New Day Yesterday) and Fire And Water. The sonic quality of this recording is arguably even better than the previous releases - owners of the DVD know what they're in for - and the inclusion of songs from Joe's latest album Dust Bowl (the rendition of the title track here is stunning), and other tracks appearing for the first time on a live album, makes this essential for Bonamassa fans, this time including those who already have the previous three live discs, and more or less any other fan of modern blues music too.
