Devilish Distance – Deathtruction

Despite having one of the worst band and album names of all time, Devilish Distance makes a pretty tasty slab of old-school death metal with Deathtruction, originally released on Russian label Mazzar in 2010. Taking many cues from bands like Vader and Decapitated, Devilish Distance’s type of death metal is ultra-fast and pretty much follows the same song progression for every track. At least the songs are pretty catchy, because there really isn’t anything present here to make them stand out from the countless hordes of lesser-known death metal bands who sound exactly like this. However, there are a few fleeting moments of brilliance that should have been expanded upon. In the song Legion Christless there is an absolutely tastefully-done and infectious breakdown that added so much character and memorability to the song. The band has the ability in them to make something truly memorable, but settles instead on making mostly paint-by-numbers death metal. It’s extremely easy to lose track of which song you’re on, considering they all pretty much sound the same. When they’re at their best, like with the album closer Panzerfaust, they are just a glorified Vader worship band. And that’s the biggest fault with Devilish Distance. While the album is a fun listen at first, it grows old really quick once the novelty of hearing a new album wears off, because they are doing nothing that bands all over the world aren’t doing, and the other bands are usually doing it better.
