Azaghal – Nemesis

Azaghal has been making solid Finnish black metal for over fifteen years. Their ninth studio album, Nemesis, combines all of their past sounds into a very satisfying black metal album. It contains the harsh elements of past Norwegian black metal bands, and the more melancholy moments typically found outside the Norwegian scene. Nemesis is perfect for fans of the melodic but unrelenting black metal such as Watain and Sargeist. The second track, Pohjoisen Valkoinen Kuolema is a wonderful example of the meloncholic type of black metal that Azaghal is capable of. These moments are undoubtedly the highlight of the album. The songs don’t really offer anything new or exciting to the black metal world, but it’s still an extremely strong release with extremely strong songs. It’s a good mix of the more straight-forward attack of second-wave black metal bands, and the expansive sounds of a current black metal band. At times, Nemesis is reminiscent of Satyricon at their best, which is never a bad thing. A solid release from a now legendary band in the black metal scene.
