Transnight – The Dark Half

Time for more traditional heavy metal from Germany, this time in the shape of Transnight’s debut album The Dark Half. Transnight play mostly Grave Digger-ish heavy metal, including some noticeable thrash influences here and there. The band themselves are competent, albeit not particularly noteworthy – the record has a few good riffs and often trails into instrumental thrashing on a fairly regular basis. They don’t demonstrate a real talent for shredding out good solos (something most thrash bands should be doing), but otherwise these parts are fun and enough to give the band some credit. So without mentioning the vocals, Transnight are an okay band who don’t excel, but are far from bad. The problem though is the band’s lead singer, who is pretty inconsistent throughout, but on the whole struggles his way through the entire album. He does some alright screaming every once in a while, but mostly he sounds half-arsed and not very competent as a singer. The lyrics are often trite and sometimes outright laughable – Bite My Shiny Metal Ass (not the only tired ‘Futurama’ reference on the album) offers a rant at ‘poser’ looking acts on the cover of Metal Hammer, serious business here then. Overall, alongside an atypically poor production, what is an otherwise okay effort is brought down by a very weak singer – fairly safe to ignore.
