M.ill.ion – Sane & Insanity

With a surprising six albums under their belt, Sweden’s M.ill.ion have been hammering out their melodic rock at a fairly decent rate the last decade. Despite one of the most irritating and misleading names a band could possibly choose (with that punctuation, it sounds like they should be a hip hop act), the band have obviously been successful enough to keep producing new albums. Their latest, Sane & Insanity, is a competent classic melodic rock record, with everything working as intended and no real surprises in formula or structure. There’s little in the way of obvious major issues with the album and for the majority of melodic rock fans, it should certainly prove to be an agreeable listen. That being said – and to be utterly frank – Sane & Insanity is a classic case of rock by numbers. There’s good melody, some hooks and generally speaking the record is performed well. However at the same time there’s nothing that really sets this record on fire. Tracks such as Cry To Heaven, Under Your Wings and the album’s title track are all fairly nice songs and the album as a whole is rather pleasant, but it just isn’t strong enough to make a mark. Sane and Insanity doesn’t come across as an album that will boost the band to greater heights – it feels like just another melodic rock record, with nothing to distinguish it from every other record of the same genre. That being said though, Sane & Insanity might be enough to keep their existing audience happy, which counts for something.
