Lechery – In Fire

Anyone who heard Lechery’s 2008 debut album Violator probably won’t be expecting the band to have evolved their sound very much for second offering In Fire, being as they were basically unevolved traditional heavy metal anyway. And they haven’t changed at all. They’re still a mixture of Edguy and Helloween without the humour, Brainstorm without the sincerity or emotion, and HammerFall without the polish. Still packing some exceedingly silly songs and lyrics (Heart of A Metal Virgin? Really?), this is unashamedly cliché stuff, enforced by exemplary production which makes the whole thing sound impressively heavy and crisp. Just like Violator, if the quality of the lyrics and so forth are set aside, In Fire is as enjoyable example of daft-but-pure metal being produced today as any other, but it’s hard to see how fans of such brain-in-a-box frivolity are going to stop playing their Manowar and Yngwie Malmsteen records long enough to give it the time of day if it doesn’t offer them anything different. And honestly, it’s doesn’t. This kind of substanceless stuff was fine for one album, but they need to evolve if they’re going to have any staying power at all.
