Impiety – Worshippers of The Seventh Tyranny

Impiety is not a progressive metal band. Not by a long shot. That being said, Worshippers Of The Seventh Tyranny is easily the band’s most progressive offering to date. With more than 20 years under the belt, Singapore’s most well-known band has challenged themselves with this release. Think Venom‘s At War With Satan but applied to a war metal band. Worshippers… is just under 40 minutes long, but the track has distinct movements; about six in total. These range from fast-paced, solo-induced black metal a la Marduk or Impaled Nazarene, to war metal worship that echoes bands like Blasphemeophager and Order From Chaos. The latter is where Impiety really shines; they’ve got those guitars and shrieking/talking vocals that war metal is known for down so well. A good thing about making such a long track in an extreme metal genre is that the track HAS to be good. This type of music is normally good for six or seven minutes, tops. Impiety changes sounds between movements (nothing too drastic) and keeps everything sounding fresh which just gives the whole thing a very epic feel. The one aspect that ultimately stops this from being a perfect record is that it kind of drags on near the end. The first 60% is fantastic, the next 20% is nothing special, then the last 20% kicks your ass to finish you off. If Impiety were to break up now, they could be proud by leaving the underground metal world one of the most challenging and most satisfying releases they’ve done in 20 years.
