Dripback – Inhaling The Ashes

Formed from various past members of Ted Maul and Labrat among others, Dripback introduce themselves with a six song EP, Inhaling The Ashes. The EP starts with a firm hardcore bassline before a sample yells ‘C’mon you cunts!’ – which just about sums up the mood of the EP. Inhaling The Ashes at its core is a firm, issue-free hardcore record, with some metal guitar work and a rather aggressive, violent outlook. With plenty of metalcore and deathcore bands diluting what makes both hardcore and metal good in the first place, it’s relieving to find a band that seems to have captured the best of both worlds. On the metal side, the album is heavy and loud, with an ominous and slightly nasty overtones to it. Meanwhile on the hardcore side, the music is fast but with a good pace to it, the perfect soundtrack to nights out in small, packed and sweaty venues. Most importantly though, whilst the music here is particularly violent, it does come with that united, fraternal feeling that pervades through all good hardcore. The EP is perhaps too short to really prove that the band can make good over a larger stretch of materials, but otherwise it’s an impressive start.
