DoomSword – The Eternal Battle

Summing DoomSword up is pretty easy. Four Italians with eminently silly stage names playing Sabaton songs in the style of Blind Guardian. The thing is, when Sabaton and Blind Guardian already exist, is there much room for DoomSword? Regardless, they’ve lasted over 10 years so far and are a staple of “true” metal festivals like Keep It True and Bang Your Head!!!, plus any other smaller festivals with ‘iron’ or ‘steel’ in the title. Their original influence and style was heavily based in medieval music, and they probably should have stuck with that. Now, although the battles they sing about are clearly of that time rather than the modern warfare Sabaton focus on, there’s not much of that sound left in their music, which makes The Eternal Battle rather forgettable. It’s not bad, and is produced and played very well, but it’s not particularly gripping and fans of other bands in the epic heavy metal genre are unlikely to find much room for yet another sound-alike. Having a vocalist in Deathmaster (see?) with a lower, rougher voice, who doesn’t sound like Fabio Lione, Joacim Cans or Tobias Sammet certainly gives them one extra weapon compared to most power metal clones, but most people looking for that have already found it in Hansi Kursch. Anyone who can’t get enough epic battle metal probably should check this out, because it’s solid entry into the genre. Anyone content with Blind Guardian need not bother.
