Destruction – Day of Reckoning

Coming three years after their last album Destruction continue to enjoy a second coming of sorts thanks to the resurgence of thrash metal, securing many high profile tours, including a headlining tour of the US and the special guest slot on Overkill’s Killfest. That period of time has also included the release of a first-class double live album and a live DVD. Unsurprisingly therefore the German verterans carry on where they left off with Day of Reckoning, providing very few surprises in actual fact. After a messy start The Price is classic old Destruction and more or less sets the standard for the disc. There are one or two different elements here, like Armageddonizer and Destroyer Or Creator, which has a distinctly Death Angel feel to them, giving it a groove Destruction’s songs don’t often have, but for the most part this is D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N. mark two. And that’s really what Destruction fans want from them. Razor sharp, familiar, impeccably produced thrash full of devastating solos enough headbanging moments to cause injury. Therefore tracks like Misfit, Devil’s Advocate, Church of Disgust, Sorcerer of Black Magic and so on could fit just as well on any post-Schmier-reunion Destruction album as it could on a new album. Fans simply what more high-quality Destruction, and that’s what they’re getting with Day of Reckoning. No mould-breaking, just prime Destruction.
