Deicide – To Hell With God

Deicide is a tricky band. In the 2000s, Glen Benton’s infamous band has been walking a thin line between classic death metal albums (Scars Of The Crucifix, The Stench of Redemption) and half-hearted memories of a former glory (Till Death Do Us Part, Insineratehymn). I’m happy to say with confidence that To Hell With God rips just as hard as Deicide ever has. Despite having a terrible title, the song Save Your might just be the greatest song Deicide has written since the ’90s. In just over three-and-a-half blistering minutes, more riff’s are unleashed than most bands put out in an entire discography. The twin guitars are none other than legendary musicians Jack Owen (Cannibal Corpse) and Ralph Santola (Death, Iced Earth). Getting Ralph in the band permanently was the best thing Deicide could do. There are no slow songs on this album. Conviction is a mid-tempo headbanger that conjurs memories of Slayer‘s Criminally Insane. Angels of Hell actually has a hint of, believe it or not, newer Cattle Decapitation. Deicide really knows how to create a fantastic melody on this album but also contain breakneck speeds. If I had to nitpick, the only slight downfall of this album is that a lof of songs follow the same formula. But the songs themselves are fantastic and are great additions to the Deicide catalogue. Despite waffling on quality for the better part of ten years, Deicide have returned to their former glory with this album.
