Cerebral Bore – Maniacal Miscreation

The UK is the birthplace of heavy metal, but there are some genre’s they’re just not good at. Brutal death metal is near the top of that list. Unfortunately when it comes to Brit’s doing the slamming, the only band that comes to mind is Annotations of An Autopsy, which is just deathcore in disguise. However, Cerebral Bore are looking to change everyone’s view on England’s take on brutality with Maniacal Miscreation. At just over 30 minutes long, the album is pretty enjoyable and never really suffers from songs sounding the same. The one giant downfall that this album has is that it’s very breakdown-heavy, and not the good kind. Open Casket Priapism has a long section of a boring breakdown that sounds not too unlike something you’d hear on a Carnifex or Whitechapel record. Thankfully, most of the album is pretty enjoyable, although standard, brutal death metal. Entombed in Butchered Bodies has a fantastic groove to it, thanks in part to part of its nonsensical lyrics made to fit the beat of the song. I kid you not, the chorus is “Ee pee oppa pee pee, Ee pee oppa pee.” Whatever works, right? Cerebral Bore feel like a sped-up version of Malignancy, a slowed down vesion of Brain Drill, or a straight-forward version of Embryonic Devourment. At times they teeter very close to being another deathcore band trying to be metal, but Cerebral Bore does a pretty good job of keeping it brutal, and keeping it metal.
