Battlelore – Doombound

Doombound is the first concept album from fantasy-themed goth metallers Battlelore, focusing on J.R.R. Tolkien hero Túrin Turambar. If the character doesn’t sound familiar its because he doesn’t appear in any of the well known books, with his legends being told in the books compiled by his son – most notably in ‘The Children of Húrin’. Battlelore are clearly fantasy and Tolkien geeks, but then that’s probably not news to anybody. Whilst the album is technically a concept album there are few indications beyond its lyrics, and if not told beforehand this album might sound like any other Battlelore record to most – decent goth metal with a beauty and beast dynamic and strong fantasy overtones. On the whole the record itself is well produced and whilst none of the performances are outstanding, the music itself is well written and both singers are capable in their roles. There’s some subtle viking metal influences in places, as well as the compulsory touches of sombre folk music that should be expected from any Tolkien-themed output. Mostly however this is a classic sounding goth metal record once you get past the additional themes; this is by no means a bad thing and those whom already love the female fronted goth metal scene will find plenty to enjoy here. Listeners with a love of fantasy and Tolkien especially will find some additional depth to the record as well. Ultimately this is unlikely to be among the best female-fronted metal records this year – but it’s still a good listen nonetheless.
