Autopsy – Macabre Eternal

The death metal masters have returned, and it’s like they never left. Macabre Eternal is the next logical step in Autopsy’s storied and celebrated career after their album Mental Funeral. Let’s face it, everything else was basically early Abscess albums. The album starts out with Hand Of Darkness which basically runs over everything you can expect from the album: break-neck death beats, doomed-out slow riffs and Chris Reifert’s amazing vocals. Dirty Gore Whore is basically an early ’90s Autopsy track with better production. It’s pretty much impossible to compare Autopsy to anyone but themselves, but there’s definite influences here from different spectrums of the metal genre, from Celtic Frost-like melodies and speed to Coffins-esque heavy doom elements. It’s all here, and no one puts them together as nicely as Autopsy. Always About To Die has a nice groove-filed section that doesn’t feel painfully out of place, thanks to their tenure as Abscess. Macabre Eternal is chock full of more twin-guitar attacks than most of Judas Priest‘s catalogue! But don’t just expect more from the same this time around. Seeds Of The Doomed has a melody that is straight from an Iron Maiden album. It’s strange, but it works. It’s just really refreshing when a band comes back from a huge hiatus and releases what could potentially be one of their best albums yet. If you’re a fan of death metal at all, you need to hear this album.
