Zodiac Mindwarp And The Love Reaction – We Are Volsung

Now five years since their last album Rock Savage, the late ’80s/early ’90s brainchaild of Mark Manning, who were enveloped in the grunge period at the time, are set to release their latest effort before a few select live appearances. A thick, fuzzy guitar tone is the order of the day, which adds real grit to tracks like the fist-raising title-track, Stark Von Oben and the excellent, low-down and bluesy Kill Me A Mockingbird. The band are better when they’re doing heavier, dirtier tracks with sinister vocals like those three, Lucille, Die Pretty and Tree Rider than on 1970s Iggy And The Stooges style garage rock like We Ride and White Trash and a very-Alice Cooper Don’t Touch My Guitar. At 31 minutes the album is sadly far too short and goes by much too quickly. The value for money factor falls immediately into question, but there are several very good tracks which should make the live set when the band support Cooper for his special Halloween shows very enjoyable.
