Wino – Live At Roadburn 2009

A tireless doom metal legend, Scott “Wino” Weinrich made an exclusive appearance at the ‘Afterburner’ post-festival event at 2009 Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, Holland supporting his recently released debut solo album Punctuated Equilibrium. Alongside six tracks from the album, one of which was a vinyl-only bonus track, Wino took the opportunity to play tracks by all of his currently inactive previous bands, which means songs by The Obsessed (5), The Hidden Hand (1) and Spirit Caravan (2) all get an airing with Wino handling all guitars himself, Clutch‘s Jean Paul Gaster on drums and Rezin‘s Jon Blank (R.I.P.) on bass. Most of the songs are played out fairly faithfully, but the requisit jam moments are still present, like the hugely extended medley of Release Me and Wild Blue Yonder, both from Puncuated Equilibrium, with guitar, bass and drum solos, and again during the medley of Spirit Caravan tracks Lost Sun Dance and Secret Realm. Sometimes the waters become a little too muddied with the fuzz and feedback (Gods, Frauds, Neo-Cons & Demagogues), but otherwise this album really captures the raw, authentic performance that was so much talked about after the Festival, and listening to songs old songs from Wino’s past bands played by such an expert line-up, particularly packed with Gaster’s effortless drum fills, is a real pleasure for fans.
