Snew – We Do What We Want

Snew’s second album after 2008′s debut Snew You delivers more of the same blues-based hard rock riffs and screaching vocals for fans of Jackyl and AC/DC; the latest in a long line of albums trying the same trick. On the one hand it’s Jesse James Dupree singing for AC/DC, and offers nothing beyond that easy-to-imagine combination. But on the other it’s one hell of a fun rock ‘n’ roll record, and although it’s not as good as Big Ball‘s equally formulaic but fun debut, it’s still solid if this kind of slightly sleazy, slightly bluesy, simple-as-you-like-it rock is your thing. The album’s highlight, despite the AC/DC-isms being the presiding style, is the slow bluesy grind of Who The Hell Are You, and the production is a huge advancement from Snew You. The often thrown-around comparisons to Led Zeppelin are frankly ridiculous, but the hints of Ramones equally frequently mentioned do have some basis thanks to songs like Risking My Life and Shinebox, which are the album’s low points. We Do What We Want is unrelenting fun, but it lacks groove in a lot of places, so it’s highly likely though that Jackyl’s album will be better.
