Pumpehuset files bankruptcy

Historic Copenhagen music venue Pumpehuset (literal translation: Pump House) has filed for bankruptcy after more than 20 years staging live music in the Danish capital.

Formerly a waterworks, Pumpehuset was taken over by new management in August 2009 and quickly doubled the number of concerts held there and audience figures, fast gaining a reputation for being a much more professional operation.

But the crippling debts approaching two million Danish kroner inherited from the previous administration have proven too great to over-turn and now the closure of the venue is imminent as the management filed for bankruptcy on June 15, making it available for potential new owners.

Many events are still scheduled at Pumpehuset for the rest of the year, but ticket holders are being advised to contact their point of sale for details of refunds or new venue details if shows have been moved.

Chairman Kasper Bach (translated from Danish): “It is extremely regrettable. The new management has created an artistic turnaround in record time. The project was promising and energy on our side, but economically we have a hammer in the head before we even got started.

“We’ve done everything we could to move forward and have everywhere met with great kindness to secure the house as a venue. But overall, we need to demonstrate responsibility and recognise that it has not been possible to achieve the amibtions that both we and Copenhagen city council [had] instead of the current basis. Now it is about ensuring that others can run venue in the old pumping station from Copenhagen’s first waterworks.”
