Nightmare World – No Regrets

Fronted by Pete Morton, guitarist from Threshold and front-man of My Soliloquy, NightMare World mix power metal and progressive metal into short, catchy, but complex songs. The title track has a Primal Fear feel to it’s main riff, but overall the song recalls early Fates Warning with the sparing application of vocal harmonies in just the right places of the chorus, while Euphoria could be older period Gamma Ray or Edguy. Each track, particularly opener The New Crusade, achieves the right balance between hooks and progressive playing which keeps each song interesting and immediate without the progressive elements threatening to outstay their welcome. This material is probably Morton’s best vocal performance on record to date and with some excellent playing from the rest of the band there’s more than enough here to indicate that their debut album, which is due later in 2010 or early 2011, should be something new and exciting in a prog/power genre that is in danger of becoming a little stale.
