Gravewurm – Blood of The Pentagram

Gravewurm are an institution to the underground United States black metal scene. But unlike the majority of the bands that comprise that scene, Gravewurm has refused to change their style. They play uncompromising, blasphemous black metal that is, at its core, Havohej worship. That’s the biggest thing wrong on Blood Of The Pentagram. With so many bands out there doing new and exciting things, Gravewurm is safe in their little corner of mid-paced black metal. Even if it didn’t bleed comparisons to other, better bands, the music itself is bland and forgettable. All the bands that play this type of metal have all made exceptionally better albums 15 years ago. It’s obvious that Gravewurm want to be Demoncy in their slower parts and Mortuary Drape when they speed things up, but ultimately it comes off as an amateur attempt at worship. The drumming and riffing consistently lose their beat and just makes each song sound really unprofessional. Each song follows the same formula and they all end with the same quick fade-out that ultimately gives the album an unprofessional feel to it. I wouldn’t doubt that this album was recorded and edited on a Mac with pirated software. With no standout tracks and a running time of almost 45 minutes, Gravewurm’s latest makes for one of the most uninspiring listens in quite some time.
