Grave Digger – The Clans Will Rise Again

As a loose sequel to the Tunes of War album, which was a concept album about Scottish history, The Clans Will Rise Again continues Grave Digger’s strange (for Germans) pre-occupation with Scotland in their usual vein. Much of The Clans Will Rise Again is typical Grave Digger; slightly clichéd lyrics about battles and war, Chris Boltendahl’s rough vocals and standard power metal riffs. But a full listen will reveal one or two of the band’s finest songs of their career. Kicking off with ready-made new concert intro tape Days of Revenge the album gathers pace quickly with Paid In Blood, a full-tilt metal track and probably one of the band’s most aggressive to date. It’s almost guaranteed to be the opener on the next tour. A suitably anthemic title track and Whom The Gods Love‘s slower, driving riffs are other highlights until immense, atmospheric power ballad When Rain Turns To Blood closes in the best fashion possible. Valley of Tears sounds a little too much like Lordi to retain Grave Digger’s usual identity, but otherwise this is another album Grave Digger fans can’t fail to enjoy.
