Gentlemen of Distorted Sound – Bone Idol EP

site | buy

London-based Gentlemen of Distorted Sound are like Beyond Good And Evil era The Cult with some extra sleaze groove; their songs striking a balance between heavy riffs and catchy melody without, for the most part, sacrificing authenticity. The Cult comparison is never more evident than on muscular opener Electric particularly due to Irish front-man, and distant relation of famed American rocker Ted, Gareth Nugent’s powerful Astbury-like vocals. Iggy Pop’s presence can be felt on Beautiful Face (For Evil), The Gods could be an early Live track, there’s a certain Nickelback-ish feel to Breathe and the excellent medley of ZZ Top‘s La Grange and Grand Funk Railroad‘s Shinin’ On shows where the band’s musical roots are. To suggest that Gentlemen of Distorted Sound are little more than a covers band is way off the mark though. The five tracks here, although comparable to different potential influences, sound like a coherent whole, thanks to Mark Williams’ production, and the over-too-fast seventeen-minute runtime is bristling with hooks and great playing that all establish the bands own identity. As rock debut EPs go, it doesn’t get much better than this.
