Fleshwrought – Dimentia/Dyslexia

Take the instruments of Animosity and the vocals from Job For A Cowboy and you get Fleshwrought. Literally. It’s Navene Koperwies of Animosity (also The Faceless) on instruments and Jonny Davy of Job For A Cowboy handling the vocals. If you haven’t completely shut off from giving this band a chance based on that, then you’re in for a few surprises. Dementia/Dyslexia sounds like a Dream Theater death metal album at times, but there are other times when the music is absolutely head-scratchingly lame. Take the second track, Inner Thoughts as a prime example of what to expect from the album. Most of the track is straight-forward death metal/metalcore in the vein of The Black Dahlia Murder, but then comes a saxophone solo so out of place it would make Frank Zappa blush. That’s ultimately what stops Fleshwrought from being something more than a side-project: disconjointed solo’s and odd time signatures do nothing to help the music if it isn’t memorable. The band puts too much emphasis on being so original that they sacrifice the most important aspect of the music: the songwriting. Yes, the instrumentation is impressive. In fact, if this album was trimmed a bit, it could have been a solid EP for the band to expand upon. Honestly, if I’m not paying close attention, it’s hard to tell when one track ends and the next begins. So while it’s certainly not a futile effort, there’s enough things to nitpick at and not enough memorable songs to forever doom Fleshwrought as an interesting footnote to the bottom of two much bigger bands.
