Droids Attack – Must Destroy

Wisconsin stoner metal outfit Droids Attack are now on their third album through Crustacean Records and the dominating aspect of newest offering Must Destroy are the riffs. Relentless, heavy, stoner metal riffs from start to finish, constantly changing from Sabbath-slowness to Kyuss and back, perhaps inadvertently taking centre stage away from the vocals at times, broken up on occasion by suitably fuzzy solos over a thick low-end. Indeed there are no vocals at all until the third track, Blueshammer, and when they arrive they are what would generally be expected from stoner metal; a combination of rough and smooth. Now, it has to be admitted that not everything on Must Destroy (Koko Beware, The Arcade Bully, Canadian Death Bus) is entirely serious, but any lack of lyrical substance is more than made up for by the non-stop riffing, which matches the likes of instru-metal bands like Karma To Burn, but where their music occasionally falls foul of too much repetition and similar riffs, Droids Attack’s use of vocals fills the space, meaning their songs never tire. Must Destroy is some of the most riff-filled stoner metal to emerge in 2010, like instrumental post metal with vocals, and a must for fans of the genre.
