Crashdïet – Generation Wild

Now on singer number three in as many albums following the agreed departure of the reportedly uncommitted Olli Herman Kosunen in 2008 after just a year in the band Crashdïet contiue to persue their glam/sleaze rock image with Simon Cruz, who joined in the Summer of 2009. Generation Wild only partially achieves that aim. Some of the tracks bring together the heavy riffs and biting vocals the style requires, but others are too radio-friendly and too cheerful for the sub-genre they’re aiming to be part of. The title track is more or less Children of The Night by Dream Evil and Rebel could be any number of Mötley Crüe songs, but tracks like Armageddon, So Alive and Native Nature stand up against anything on their first two albums. But its in songs like Save Her, Chemical and Down With The Dust which capture the US pop-rock chart youth feel that most rock fans will see a weakness, although in the case of the latter two guitar solos adds a little genuine rock sound. Other tracks get the riff part right, like Bound To Fall, but not the vocal melodies. Closing power ballad Beautiful Pain picks the end of the record up a little, but there’s already been too much skipable radio filler before it. Signing with Frontiers will get them some proper international mainstream distribution for the first time, but the mainstream (and US-influenced) nature of some of the music will end up a detriment.
