Black Country Communion - LIVE: John Henry's Ltd., London 2010

Secret Album Showcase
London - September 20
Capacity 100

Coinciding with the release of their debut album Black Country the new band featuring Glenn Hughes, Joe Bonamassa, Jason Bonham and Derek Sherinian played this secret album showcase to a very select audience.

Only invited guests and competition winners could attend the tiny rehearsal studio at John Henry's Ltd. in London to see a "supergroup" who are likely to play venues much larger when they tour properly following the recording of their second album early in 2011, and were treated to a tight 50-minute set debuting several songs from the album.

And just as the album itself showed, Black Country Communion sees the veteran Hughes in his finest voice for many years. Back to a straight rock 'n' roll vibe, but with all the groove you would expect from Hughes and blues maestro Bonamassa, this short performance left everyone in no doubt that they are guaranteed to be a first class live act.

On the album Bonamassa takes lead vocals for just two songs and only one of those, the sensational Song of Yesterday, was debuted here, with all of the passion and ferocity of the recorded blues solos which make the song one of the highlights of the record intact and even more emotive in the live setting. The rest of the songs, including Trapeze standard Medusa, epic Stand (At The Burning Tree), and first single One Last Soul, were handled expertly by Hughes.

Even more so live than on the album it has to be said that Derek Sherinian is at best under-used, and at worst not needed at all. All of the songs are very strongly oriented to the standard guitar-bass-drums power trio sound, and most of the time Sherinian either struggles to be heard, or simply has nothing to do, which is a great shame for a virtuoso of his standard, but it can't be said the songs suffer for it.

The showcase did its job. It has shown beyond all question that Black Country Communion will be a highly successful venture both in the studio and on stage, and every one of the 100 or so people in attendance wanted to hear more songs when the band left the stage.
