Wolf – Ravenous

site | label | buy

To expect Wolf to top previous album The Black Flame would probably be unrealistic, and as a whole Ravenous doesn’t manage it, but it does contain tracks that are more than capable of sitting alongside their current finest hour. Opener Speed On certainly isn’t one of them. A fairly uninspired riff by their standards, and decidedly sub-par lyrics make it a very weak start. Curse You Salem rectifies matters, and Voodoo will certainly be a crowd-pleaser live, but the string of Hail Caesar, an unadventurous title track and the very-Helloween Mr. Twisted start to make The Black Flame look like a very distant target. From the exellent Love At First Bite and Secrets We Keep onwards things improve, and closer Blood Angel is by far the album’s highlight, but while Ravenous is likely to be Wolf’s most internationally successful album to date, it’s far from their best.
