U.D.O. - Dominator

Udo Dirkschneider and company started their usual album cycle back in July with the Infected EP just as they did with Mastercutor in 2007, but this time everything's more interesting than Mastercutor. The last record was straight forward U.D.O. No frills traditional metal with a couple of exceptions. This time, with only kitsch Devil's Rendezvous being a weak link, the band have focused heavily on brooding groove riffs, and the title track, lead video single Black And White, Infected, Doom Ride, opener The Bogeyman and Speed Demon are all heavy, dark and above all, different. Mix in the obligatory melodic sing-a-long Heavy Metal Heaven, and the more thoughtful attempts on Stillness of Time and closer Whispers In The Dark and the album feels more complete than Mastercutor. Some of the least popular songs on Mastercutor were the darker, heavier ones though (Stalker The Dark, The Wrong Side of Midnight), so whether or not an album with more of those songs, albeit better ones, will succeed with fans is a risk. But one worth taking, for both parties.
