The Last Vegas – Whatever Gets You Off

Whatever Gets You Off is the kind of hard rock album limp-wristed pretenders like Hot Leg wished they could produce, but are too focused on gimmickry and tongue-in-cheek humour to manage. Similar to Stone Gods in many respects, drawing together a mixture of Jackyl, L.A. Guns and classic Aerosmith, this is not The Last Vegas’ first release, but is their debut on Nikki Sixx’s Eleven Seven Records, and easily their strongest collection of material to date. Leading with the AC/DC-ish title track sets the tone through I’m Bad, which is more Mötley Crüe-meets-Aerosmith, high-paced Another Lover and High Class Trash, ballad Apologize and the grooving Dirty Things You Do. With this album The Last Vegas would have fit perfectly in the mid-late ’80s hard rock scene amongst the aforementioned, Skid Row and Ratt. And while several bands are tying to make this kind of music at the moment, not many are doing it as convincingly as this. The temptation for a young band will always be there to go for the teen market, along the route of Hinder, Saving Abel and Paramore, hopefully they can resist and tread similar ground to Hardcore Superstar and Nightvision.
