Jack Bruce & Robin Trower – Seven Moons Live

As the title suggests this DVD counterpart to the CD released in August, is the entire 2008 Seven Moons album, apart from I’m Home, played live almost in order broken up after three tracks by Cream’s Sunshine of Your Love and Trower’s Carmen, and capped at the end with Cream classics White Room and Politician. Recorded in February this year at De Vereeniging in Nijmegen, Holland it has the superb picture quality and sound clarity you would expect from a professional recording in 2009, but a then 65-year-old Bruce, one of the biggest influences on rock music of all time, sounding strangely tentative for the whole 85-minutes, was not on his best vocal form. He particularly doesn’t cope well with bassier vocal parts like those on Come To Me and Distance Places of The Heart and overall, apart from the slow-paced Bad Case of Celebrity and occasional moments on Sunshine of Your Love, Carmen and the wonderfully grooving Perfect Place, his voice was often flat and were the playing of Trower, drum virtuoso Gary Husband and Bruce himself not first-rate, it might have spoiled the remarkable jam-room feel of this intimate gig. Fans who enjoyed the live CD will love the DVD even more. Watching a talented power trio live is one of the best things in music, but anyone who hasn’t heard the CD already will have to overcome Bruce’s lacking vocals first.
