Ektomorf – What Doesn’t Kill Me…

Overall much heavier and a lot less Soulfly-sounding than both Outcast and Instinct, Hungary’s biggest metal band really need a good album after the fiasco of their last UK tour (a disasterous co-headliner with Stuck Mojo which saw crowds every night 90% comprised of Mojo fans, who mostly left before Ektomorf took the stage). For the most part, What Doesn’t Kill Me is about as good as they could hope for as it’s not a carbon copy of the last two discs. Rat War could have come from any of their previous three albums, but more alternative riffs, a brutally heavy sound, and a couple of guest appearances mean this album carries its own much more competently than Outcast did. The album finishes stronger than it starts, with the super-heavy Revenge To All being the highlight of the first half and Sick of It All with Lord Nelson from Stuck Mojo, disappointingly better than almost everything on the new Mojo record, standing out in the second. Ektomorf fans should find some new depth to the band’s sound here, while anyone who is a fan of the likes of Soulfly should start either here or with Instinct.
