Derek Sherinian – Molecular Heinosity

Nomadic keyboardist Sherinian, probably still most famous for his work with Dream Theater, has created probably his most ambitious solo album to date here, opening with a three-track, constantly flowing concept piece (actually, the distinctions between the tracks are non-existent) showing off incredibly musicianship from start to finish. Sherinian co-wrote the whole album with progressive drum veteran and Planet X band mate Virgil Donati, who also plays most of the drum tracks, and has recalled regular guests Zakk Wylde (who’s unmistakable tones are all over Wings of Insanity), Billy Idol band mate Brian Tichy (drums) and bassist Tony Franklin (who has appeared on all of Sherinian’s solo albums), adding guitar shredder Rusty Cooley to the ever-expanding list of musicians he’s worked with. Indeed Sherinian consistently brings the best out of the likes of Wylde, who’s playing on Wings of Insanity is some of the best of his career. He’s a little under-used in the vocal department though, again only appearing on one track (haunting, excellent So Far Gone). There are a couple of weaker moments/ideas, like the unnecessary fading out of Frozen By Fire in the middle of a keyboard solo, occasional needless and over-common prog moments (like the disjointed time changes in Antarctica) and mellow The Lone Spaniard drags a little, but otherwise this is easily Derek’s best, if not most accessible solo release.
