Celesty – Vendetta

site | label | buy

Celesty’s brand of epic power metal mixes elements of Therion, Sonata Arctica, Nightwish and Blind Guardian into what is really a very common formula. Several songs about warriors, kings and general fantasy themes sound very familiar. Although undoubtedly a technically accomplished band (14-minute epic Legacy of Hate Pt. 3 is a testament to this), with some excellent songs (Dark Emotions, Greed & Vanity, Legacy of Hate Pt. 3, Lord (of This Kingdom)), many of their others (Like Warriors, Autumn Leaves, New Sin) feel too generic and bring to mind other bands vividly enough that the temptation to press ‘stop’ and reach for discs by those bands may be too great for some. Grand intro track Prelude For Vendetta does an excellent job of building up a little bit of anticipation, but Euphoric Dream, although urgent and upbeat with a great solo, does little to present any new ideas, and that feeling remains for most of the disc. All in Vendetta is simply an average power metal album, like so many others. All the necessary trademarks are there, but there’s little else. Fans of the genre only.
