Bullet For My Valentine – Hearts Burst Into Fire

20-20 Entertainment
Produced by Colin Richardson

As Bullet For My Valentine (successfully) continue to try to establish themselves as a bona fide metal band they release a second single from excellent new album Scream Aim Fire, following the very-metal title track as a first single.

One of the less remarkable tracks from the album, it is much less impacting that the title track and it’s competent Megadeth-like riffing isn’t really enough to make it hugely interesting. The chorus is catchy, but nothing special, and the 45-seconds of wonderful guitar melodies and soloing at the beginning and end are nearly worth the price of admission alone, but not quite. It’s a solid album track, but not really a single. Say Goodbye, the album’s outstanding ballad, would be a much more obvious choice for a single, but perhaps wouldn’t endear them to many metal fans.

The acoustic version used as a b-side is much more worthwhile than the same treatment Forever As Always received on the Scream Aim Fire single, which really gained nothing, but is still not that interesting, especially lacking as it is the intro and outro from the electric version. Indeed for both singles so far the better and far more interesting b-sides are on the limited-appeal 7″ vinyl releases. A cover of Ozzy Osbourne‘s Crazy Train in the first instance, and No Easy Way Out (also the Ozzy song?) in the second, these are far superior to the acoustic versions of album tracks on the CD editions.

For owners of the album there’s not enough here to buy the CD of this single. Vinyl lovers should enjoy the 7″ for its non-LP b-side, but for the majority of listeners this is useless. In terms of chart potential, or attracting new metal fans, I don’t think Hearts Burst Into Fire was the right choice for either purpose, but perhaps strikes a happy middle ground. For chart potential Say Goodbye should be used, for attracting metal fans, Waking The Demon.
