KoRn – Evolution

Virgin Records
Produced by Atticus Ross, Korn & The Matrix

Korn’s new single is taken from their forthcoming untitled album, to be released in the UK on July 23rd. The single is called Evolution and is certainly not what I remember Korn sounding like.

I certainly seem to remember Korn being much more shouty and on a par with Slipknot (you’re talking about someone who’s not really a metal or very heavy rock fan here). What you’re getting with this single is a rather reasonable look at the state of humanity and our progress in the grander scheme of things. There’s actually quite a bit of thought behind this song which tackles war and our parallels with primates. Ok so there’s a certain amount of death and destruction but it’s not as black as I expected so you can put down your kohl pencil right now.

Every single word is audible and fails to be drowned out by the incessant drumming and eager guitar playing. I would actually consider listening to the album on the basis of this single, something I’d never contemplated before. I don’t think there’s anything especially new in the way the track has been put together; the drums are the sort I’d expect and there’s nothing that stands out about the guitar playing. In fact the vocal isn’t even especially notable apart from its lack of volume and incomprehensibility. Still gravely, still gruff.

Really impressed actually. But after eight studio albums, you’d want to hear something impressive.

“ nothing new ”
