Mötley Crüe – Carnival of Sins Live

Universal Music
Directed by Hamish Hamilton

The second live DVD from Mötley Crüe, and the first to feature the original lineup of Vince Neil, Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx and Mick Mars finally hits the UK and Europe next month. The last DVD, Lewd, Crüed And Tattooed, shot on the New Tattoo tour with Samantha Maloney filling in on drums was met with strong criticism regarding Vince Neil’s performance and ability to still sing the old material. Claims that he left out as many words as he sang were very common. If there really was anything at all wrong with the last one, this one makes up for it in spades.

Everything about this release is perfect. The sound, picture quality, camera work and editing are all superb, capturing the sheer spectacle of Mötley’s show. Mötley’s performance is likewise excellent. It’s impossible when watching this DVD not to feel the tangible party atmosphere that was clearly present that night in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The set list is also brilliant, with this show being one of the few 2005 shows to include both Sick Love Song and If I Die Tomorrow, the two newest additions to the Mötley Crüe repertoire.

The rest of the set runs as a best of the original line-up years, from the band’s earliest songs in the shape of Too Fast For Love and Live Wire through the seminal Girls, Girls, Girls and Dr. Feelgood to Glitter and Afraid from 1997′s Generation Swine. Clearly the band only ever intended to stick to material recorded by the original line-up as there are no songs in the set from New Tattoo which featured Randy Castillo replacing Tommy Lee on drums, and nothing from the fantastic John Corabi fronted eponymous album from 1994, which some would say (myself included) is Mötley Crüe’s finest hour. However, the newly reunited original line-up are mounting a serious case to the contrary. If the new album, scheduled to be recorded later this year, can live up to the show the band have been putting on so far, we may have a new leader.

Of course, all the American Mötley fans already know all of this, as the DVD was released State-side in October of last year, but for the rest of us the wait is almost over, and let me tell you it’s been worth it. An absolutely essential purchase for all Mötley fans, all fans of genuine hard rock or heavy metal, anyone that likes to see a good spectacle… this is essential for anyone!
