Universal’s ongoing deluxe edition series sees this classic Skynyrd record get reissued for the second time, following the back catalogue remastering of the MCA albums in the late ’90s, and this is by far the definitive edition.

The main album remains the same as the MCA remaster. The key to this release is the excellent bonus material. Where the MCA remaster contained just two bonus tracks – live renditions of Cry For The Bad Man and the title track – this version keeps those two bonus tracks and adds Double Trouble and I Got the Same Old Blues from the same concert, plus an acoustic version of All I Can Do Is Write About It and an alternate studio take of Double Trouble previously unavailable anywhere else.

Universal have also added a DVD containing the entire legendary performance from the BBC’s ‘Old Grey Whistle Test’ show. Previously only Free Bird (probably the most popular and awe-inspiring performance thereof) was officially available on the double-disc BBC compilation, so this is the first time the rest of the set, including Sweet Home Alabama and I Ain’t The One, has been available to Skynyrd fans. The quality of the footage is as good as the BBC remastered set, looking about as good as footage from 1976 can look, and the sound quality is superb.

This deluxe edition brings together in one release two of the greatest pieces of Skynyrd’s history; one of their classic albums and their most acclaimed performance on film. Essential for all fans and everyone who already owns this album in some form or another should probably consider replacing it with this one.
