Lacuna Coil – Enjoy The Silence

Century Media
Produced by Waldemar Sorychta

The choice for second single from the new Lacuna Coil album Karmacode is an odd one. As many will undoubtedly have realised, Enjoy The Silence is a cover of the Depeche Mode classic. Now, Cristina (Scabbia, vocals) told me a couple of months ago that the inclusion of the cover on the album was merely as a bonus track, and they had not elected to do it as a potential single. I therefore suspect a little record company influence. But that’s ultimately here nor there. Is it good, and should we all be buying it?

Yes, and yes. Lacuna Coil have taken a song that is reasonably far-removed from rock and made it sound like one of their own songs. You can still tell what the song is, they haven’t changed the melodies or parts of the song, just some arrangements, adding in the dual vocal lines and such like. Now, I’m (believe it or not) a big fan of the Depeche Mode original, but this kicks it into the dirt.

The commercial release will contain the non-LP track Virtual Environment on the standard CD single, with live versions of To The Edge and Fragile, both from Karmacode, on the digipak CD single with a free poster. A blue coloured vinyl edition will also be available with the track Silence on the b-side. The single is released on June 26.
