Comes With The Fall – The Reckoning EP

DVL Recordings
Produced by William DuVall

Comes With The Fall may have only registered on the consciousness of many due to singer/guitarist William DuVall’s current position as Alice In Chains front-man, but that’s hardly going to do them any harm. This new EP, a precursor to a brand new album, is probably highly likely to be their biggest selling CD to date, and deservedly so.

Even fans eagerly awaiting the new album need this EP as well, since of the five songs here only one is going to be on the album. The other four are exclusive to this disc. The material as a whole is the band’s heaviest to date. First track Rockslide is the song to be featured on the album Beyond The Last Light, and is a suitably raucous hard rock affair, showing hints of what made William a perfect fit for AIC, with a great mid-paced riff and a hooky chorus. The perfect opener for an EP, and might prove to be a good opener for the album, as well.

Escape The Crime is a little more punk-influenced, while Evil Rising has more of a stoner/alternative feel, perhaps like something Jerry Cantrell would produce on a solo record, if he were playing with Kyuss. The band come into their own, however, on the two smoldering slower-paced tracks that close this disc. Title track The Reckoning is reminiscent of a slow-burner by The Cult in the beginning, but the way it builds up from the first chorus onwards is all CWTF and is truly wonderful, especially with DuVall’s snappy and tasteful solos and passionate vocals over the searing melody and punchy backing from drummer Bevan Davies and bassist Adam Sanger.

Closer Chameleon Blues is, as you’d expect from the title, a blues-based number. Again, a slow-burner with some exquisite solos, DuVall’s best vocals of the disc and the backing from Sanger and Davies as perfect as it’s been; their touch and timing nailed down without fault.

This is a disc to get everybody dialled in with, those completely new to Comes With The Fall, those discovering them through Alice In Chains, or those that have been waiting so long for new material from the band. It’s cheap as well.
